Zuckerberg Thinks Smart Glasses Are Our Future. Really?

So Mark Zuckerberg is back with another bold prediction about the future of tech. This time, he's convinced that smart glasses will become so essential that imagining life without them will be impossible. Sound familiar? Yeah, that's because just a few years ago he was telling us the same thing about the metaverse.

I've actually been testing Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses for the past few months, and honestly, they're pretty decent. The audio quality surprises me every time I take a call, and being able to snap photos without pulling out my phone feels genuinely useful at concerts or while hiking. But here's the thing - useful doesn't always mean essential. My AirPods are useful too, but I wouldn't say life without them is unimaginable.

What strikes me about Zuckerberg's latest proclamation is how much it echoes his metaverse pitch from 2021. Remember when he changed Facebook to Meta and promised we'd all be living our best virtual lives by now? Instead, most people I know tried VR once at a friend's house and never touched it again. The Quest headsets are gathering dust in closets across America.

But maybe smart glasses are different. They don't isolate you from the real world like VR headsets do. You can wear them all day without looking like you're cosplaying as a robot. Apple's rumored to be working on their own version for 2027, and when Apple enters a category, things tend to shift pretty quickly. Still, I can't help but wonder if this is just another case of tech executives mistaking their own enthusiasm for mass market appeal.

The real test? Whether regular people - not just tech enthusiasts like me - find these glasses solve actual problems in their daily lives. Until then, I'm keeping my expectations in check.
