Waymo's Robotaxis Get Chatty With Gemini AI Assistant

So Waymo's robotaxis might soon have their own personal assistant. And not just any assistant - they're testing Google's Gemini AI to handle passenger questions and control stuff inside the car. Someone dug through about 1,200 lines of system code and found the whole setup.

I've been watching the robotaxi space for a while now, and this feels like the natural next step. Think about it - you're sitting in a car with no driver, maybe feeling a bit weird about the whole thing. Having an AI that can answer your questions ("Hey, why are we taking this route?") or adjust the temperature when you ask could make the whole experience way less awkward. It's basically bringing the smart home experience to your ride.

What caught my attention is how practical this actually sounds. The assistant can handle general knowledge questions - so if you're curious about that building you're passing or need a restaurant recommendation at your destination, you're covered. But it also controls in-cabin features, which is honestly more useful than it might sound at first. No more fumbling with touchscreens or wondering which button does what.

The timing makes sense too. Waymo's been expanding like crazy in 2025, and they need ways to make their service stand out beyond just "look ma, no driver!" Adding Gemini gives them a competitive edge and helps normalize the whole robotaxi thing for people who might still be on the fence. Plus, Google gets to show off their AI in a real-world setting that thousands of people experience daily.

Will this actually make robotaxis feel less weird? Hard to say. But having someone (or something) to talk to during your ride definitely beats staring at an empty driver's seat.
