Tech Giants Asked to Buy $15B Worth of Power Plants They Might Not Need

Here's something I didn't see coming. The White House just dropped a pretty unusual proposal that has tech companies scratching their heads. They want Big Tech to essentially buy up $15 billion worth of power plants through an upcoming PJM grid auction, whether they actually need all that electricity or not.

So what's going on here? PJM operates the electrical grid for a huge chunk of the eastern US, and electricity prices have been climbing. The administration's thinking seems to be that if tech companies - who are already massive power users thanks to all those data centers - commit to buying new generation capacity, it'll help bring more power online and eventually lower prices for everyone.

But here's where it gets weird. The proposal suggests tech companies should bid on this capacity even if they don't plan to use it all immediately. Think of it like buying a whole pizza when you're only kinda hungry, just to make sure the pizza place stays in business. Except we're talking about power plants, not pepperoni.

I've been watching how tech companies handle their energy needs for a while now, and this feels like uncharted territory. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have been building their own renewable projects and signing direct power deals. But being asked to basically subsidize the grid by overbuying capacity? That's new.

The timing is interesting too. We're in 2026, and data center power consumption keeps growing as AI applications get more demanding. Maybe the administration sees this as getting ahead of a bigger problem. Still, asking private companies to solve grid issues through what amounts to charitable overbidding seems like a pretty big ask.
