Pinterest Stock Tanks Despite Claiming More Searches Than ChatGPT

Well, this is awkward. Pinterest just dropped their earnings report and the numbers are... not great. The stock took a nosedive in after-hours trading, dropping nearly 15%. But here's where it gets interesting - they're desperately pointing to their search volume as a silver lining, claiming they handle more searches than ChatGPT.

I've been watching Pinterest for a while now, and honestly, comparing your search numbers to ChatGPT feels like comparing apples to, well, AI chatbots. Sure, people search for recipes and home decor ideas on Pinterest all day long. But ChatGPT users are asking complex questions, writing code, and having full conversations. It's a totally different beast.

The actual earnings numbers tell the real story here. Revenue came in at $981 million for Q4 2025, missing Wall Street's expectations by about $40 million. Monthly active users grew by just 2% year-over-year, which is pretty sluggish for a platform that's supposed to be growing. Ad revenue per user also disappointed, suggesting advertisers might be pulling back or users aren't engaging as much.

What strikes me most is the timing of this "we have more searches than ChatGPT" claim. It feels like Pinterest is trying to position itself as an AI-adjacent platform to ride the hype wave. But investors aren't stupid. They want to see actual revenue growth and user engagement, not vanity metrics about search volume.

Pinterest still has potential - their visual search capabilities are genuinely useful and they've got a loyal user base. But throwing out random comparisons to ChatGPT when your core business is struggling? That's not going to fix the fundamental issues they're facing in 2026's competitive social media landscape.
