Amazon pulls plug on Blue Jay robot project after 6 months

Well, that was quick. Amazon just killed off its Blue Jay robotics project, and it hadn't even been running for six months. The company says they're folding the tech into other robotics initiatives, but honestly? This feels like another case of Big Tech starting something ambitious and then going "actually, never mind."

Here's what we know: Blue Jay was supposed to be one of Amazon's next-gen robotics plays. The employees working on it got reassigned to other projects, which is corporate speak for "we changed our minds but nobody's getting fired." At least there's that. But it makes you wonder what exactly went wrong here. Was the tech not working out? Budget concerns? Or did someone higher up just decide to pivot?

I've been watching Amazon's robotics moves pretty closely, and this isn't their first quick exit. Remember when they bought Kiva Systems back in 2012 for $775 million? That worked out great - those orange robots are all over their warehouses now. But Blue Jay? Gone before most people even knew it existed.

The timing is interesting too. We're in early 2026, and Amazon's been pushing hard into AI and automation across the board. Maybe Blue Jay's tech wasn't different enough from what they already had. Or maybe they realized they could achieve the same goals cheaper with existing systems. Amazon's not saying much beyond the official "we're using the core technology elsewhere" line.

What strikes me most is how normal this has become. Tech companies launch projects, burn through millions, then quietly shut them down months later. Google's famous for this. Meta does it. And now Amazon's doing it with robots. At least the Blue Jay team landed on their feet with new assignments. That's more than you can say for a lot of these quick pivots.
